Noninvasive Surgery Treatments

A disease itself is a depressing state of body and when it involves a surgery, the traumatic state of mind is at its peak. The thought of sharp knives and needles piercing through our body, even though in the unconscious state, are very fearful. This trauma may complicate the surgical procedure, since the physiological condition of the patient may worsen. There might be a rise in the blood pressure or an elevation in the sugar level.Medical Science today has an answer to this fear of undergoing a surgery i.e. the advancement to 'Noninvasive Surgery Treatments'. Before understanding the noninvasive surgery treatments in details, we need to understand that conventionally there are two types of surgical procedures that are commonly followed: Invasive surgery - The procedure involves, accessing the body cavity through a cut or an incision. This is commonly known as an open surgery. Cardiac surgery is a very common example of an invasive surgery.Minimally invasive surgery - The procedure involves penetrating the body through smaller incisions. This is popularly conducted in the fields like Laparoscopy, Endoscopy etc.

The invasive and minimally invasive surgery procedures have a wider scope than the noninvasive surgery treatments.

As mentioned earlier non-invasive surgery does not involve cutting through the skin. They are basically observatory or highly specialized category of surgeries. These methods have been used since the past for diagnostic purposes, e.g. measuring body temperature with a Thermometer, listening to the heart sounds with a stethoscope etc.

In modern times, many surgical procedures that involved invasive techniques have been replaced by noninvasive techniques, improving the compliance of the patients.

Noninvasive surgery has its applications in various medical specialties like Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Oncology, Cardiology etc.

Needless to say these surgeries also require a well disinfected and sterile environment (sterile gloves, instruments and other surgical accessories) just as in case of invasive surgeries to prevent the spread of infection.

Cardiac Arrhythmias (a condition in which the heart beat may be too fast or too slow, that can result in cardiac arrest and sudden death) are treated with a procedure called Defibrillation. This technique makes use of a device called defibrillator which transports electric energy at a predetermined therapeutic dose to the affected area of the heart.Radiation therapy is a primary or an adjuvant therapy (depending upon the stage) in Cancer treatment to control the malignant cells.Post surgery or critical illness may cause breathing problems in some patients which can be taken care of by a medical measure called mechanical ventilation. The device used in this case is called a ventilator which causes the air to get sucked in by the lungs and thereby stabilize breathing in the patient.Urinary calculosis or kidney stones can be eradicated from the body by a noninvasive surgical treatment called lithotripsy. Laser or ultrasound forms of energy are used to cause fragmentation of the stones.Biofeedback is another popular and upcoming technique to keep a check on human ailments. This concept promotes the human innate abilities to control blood pressure, body temperature etc thereby minimizing the risk factors that lead to ailments like diabetes, heart malfunctioning, migraine etc.Ultrasound technology is being used to enhance the drug delivery to target tissues in the body.Use of Laser surgery has its application in the cosmetic world. Body hair, moles and a few other skin flaws can be eliminated with laser. Laser applications in Ophthalmology, popularly known as LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis), can solve cornea related vision problems of the eye.As there is no incision into the skin, there are less chances of developing scars post surgery. The healing process is faster and the pain experienced is much less compared to invasive procedures. The chances of acquiring an infection are less as well as there is no foreign object insertion. The patient may be discharged immediately or in a few hours in comparison with invasive procedures wherein the hospital stay is longer.Gamma Knife and Cyber knife, though termed as 'knife' actually don't function as one that cuts through.
